About Las Cruces, New Mexico

In May 2002 Las Cruces was chosen by the Forbes/Milken Institute as the #1 small place to live. It was also chosen by the editors of CNN and Money magazine as one of the top eight places to retire.

Las Cruces is located in the beautiful Mesilla Valley, bordered to the east by the spectacular Organ Mountains and to the west by the historic Rio Grande River and Robledo Mountains. Famous for it's breathtaking sunsets, Las Cruces has the feel of a laid back town. It is home to 79,000+ people, which makes it the second largest city in New Mexico. As the Las Cruces Relocation and Newcomer's Guide says, "This makes Las Cruces the ideal place to raise a family, retire, or start a new business." Our elevation is about 3,900 feet above sea level and we have an average of 350 sunny days per year.

Our economy is mainly driven by agriculture (cotton, pecans, and chile), aerospace (White Sands Missile Range, and the NASA Test Facility), tourism, and education, as we are the home of New Mexico State University which serves approximately 23,800 students.

Las Cruces provides a variety of cultural attractions with numerous galleries, museums, dining opportunities, and shopping. It offers easy access to outdoor recreation such as: White Sands National Monument, the Gila National Forest, Ruidoso Downs and Sunland Park Race Tracks, Ski Apache in Ruidoso, Caballo and Elephant Butte Lakes, all within a few hours drive of Las Cruces. The newly expanded El Paso International Airport is conveniently located 45 minutes away as is Juarez, Mexico.

The Mesilla Valley and neighboring Hatch Valley, which is the Chile Capitol of the world, grow the best chile you'll find anywhere. Because of this, Las Cruces is the home of some of the most amazing Mexican and New Mexican cuisine that will leave you coming back for more.
